Add Ingredient

Adding an ingredient from the Edit Recipe screen

When you click on the "Add Ingredients" button on the "edit recipe" screen, you will be brought here to the "add ingredients" screen. This is much like "Step 2" of creating your recipe.

Type part or the entire name of the ingredient you want to use in the "search field" at the top of the screen, and then click the "Search for Ingredient" button. RA2 will retrieve the relevant matches from the ingredient database and display them in the area just below the button you just clicked. You may use the green "up and down" arrows to scroll through the list of search results. Once you see the ingredient you want to use, highlight it by clicking on it with your mouse. If you do not immediately see the ingredient you want to use, click the "Show Expanded Results" button. This will make all the possible matches appear in the "search results" area. The expanded results typically contain ingredients that are less frequently used. If you still cannot find your ingredient, you may click the "Add a Custom Ingredient" button. This will take you to a screen that will allow you to manually add your own ingredient to the database so that you may use it in any recipe.

Once you have an ingredient selected, you will need to specify an "amount" and a "unit". Toward the bottom of the screen, you will see 2 boxes next to each other. You may type the amount of the ingredient in the smaller box. When you click on the box containing the unit (such as gm), you will see a pop-up selector that will give you the available unit choices. All ingredients will have the option to use oz, gm, lbs, and kg. Some ingredients contain information that allows RA2 to offer more choices for the unit. If a volume conversion is present, then you will also see the choices of tsp, tbsp, cup, liter, ml, gallon and pint. Some ingredients will also have a special unit that is only relevant to that ingredient. For example, "medium sized banana" might be a special unit choice for the banana ingredient only.

The "ingredient note" field is also located toward the bottom of the screen. This field is optional and provides a way for you to add a small note to any ingredient in your recipe. For example, if you're using ground pepper in your recipe, you may want to make a note to "only use freshly ground" if that is important to your recipe.

You've probably noticed the large list on the left side of the screen. This is the "Recently Used Ingredients" list. After you use an ingredient in a recipe, it will be added to this list for your convenience. If a lot of your recipes share some of the same ingredients, then you will be able to use this list to quickly add these ingredients to your recipes without having to search for them every time.

One of the new features of RA2 is the ability to use one of your recipes as an ingredient in another recipe. To use a recipe as an ingredient, just search for it by name as if you were searching for a regular ingredient. It will appear in the "results list" with all the other ingredients. You will know which ingredients are actually recipes because they will have the word "[recipe]" next to their name in the "search results". Note that when using a recipe as an ingredient, you may only use the basic units such as gm, oz, lbs, and kg.

When you select an ingredient, its basic nutritional information will be displayed in the middle of the screen. It's important to note that this information is being displayed "per serving".

When you're ready to finish adding this ingredient to your recipe, click the "Finish" button. A pop-up window will appear and give you a chance to alter the name of the ingredient you are adding. Many of the ingredient names in the database have a very scientific look to them, so if you want to use something that is friendlier, you can type it here. When you are satisfied with the ingredient name, click the "Done" button to return to the "edit recipe" screen.

Click the "Back" button to return to the "edit recipe" screen without adding any ingredients to your recipe.

There is a small but important difference between this "add ingredient" screen and "Step 2" of creating your recipe. Notice the small "edit" icon to the right of the field that displays the search results. This button allows you to edit the nutritional information of an ingredient in the database. You may find this particularly useful if you've added a custom ingredient, but didn't have all the information at the time of adding it. This feature gives you the chance to come back and fill in the blanks. Also, if you have determined that an ingredient in the database contains incorrect information, this will allow you to correct it. In order to edit a database ingredient, select the ingredient in either the "search results" list or the "recently used ingredients" list and then click on the small "edit" icon next to the "search results" list. Please note that you cannot edit a recipe that is being used as an ingredient with this feature. You may also find this feature to be helpful because it allows you to enter in a volume/weight conversion which is necessary for an ingredient to be able to offer such volume units as cups, tsp, and tbsp, etc.
